Trilobiten von Heckelmann-Mühle

Hi Peter, I received the book by mail this week. Impressive work, many interesting trilobites, and above all... a lot of food for thought and discussion!

Wieder 2 Neue - Gondwanaspis und ?Treveropyge oder gar Braunops?

That reference line makes the pathology a lot more easy to see, good idea. I like your hypothesis, might very well be true.

My pimped Zlichovaspis

You did extremely well. The free-standing spines serve a clear purpose, and the result looks simply awesome. A flawless job, I hope your adrenaline levels are back to normal now.

Gesetzliche Einschränkungen für private Sammler durch das Kulturgutschutzgesetz?

Excellent Sönke. We as collectors have to stand united in this. Fossils know no borders, and scientific research and responsible collecting should not know borders. Developments like this bill affect us all, whether directly or indirectly. Keep me informed and send me the text once it is ready.

Gesetzliche Einschränkungen für private Sammler durch das Kulturgutschutzgesetz?

Hi Sönke, I'm following these events with great surprise (not in the positive way) and concern. As you know, we're running the largest online paleo-community in Belgium-The Netherlands at fossiel.net. As I understand correctly, our signatures would be of limited added value, but nonetheless they would stress the international relevance (and commercial) potential consequences of this bill. My question to you is twofold: 1) do you think we -as fossiel.net- can help your cause? e.g. by informing ou...

Cedaria minor from the Weeks Fm

I agree in that it seems to be a ventrally exposed specimen. In that case, I would learn something new today, in that the caeca are so clearly visible also on the ventral side of the shell.

Cedaria minor from the Weeks Fm

It's a positive, but by reversing the shadows in the first picture, Andries tricks your brain into thinking it's a negative. Awesome preparation and interesting bite mark! In my eyes, it really adds to the specimen.

Harpes

Gerhard, Keep it up! You're prepping a remarkable specimen here. I'm looking forward to seeing the final result. I agree with Jens about the locality. I have one unprepped specimen from that locality waiting in my stash, I can only hope it will be as nice as yours.

Noch ein Stück aus dem Keller

Good preparation. I like these smooth trilobites a lot. The curved pose of this trilobite is interesting, I have an unprepped one with exactly the same pose (judging from the cross-section). Thanks for sharing!

In memoriam Harald Prescher: Kettneraspis prescheri VAN VIERSEN & HEISING, 2014

Many thanks to Allart and Horst for again a meaningfull step in describing the trilobite faunas of Morocco. I find this species very fitting as a tribute to Harald. It is a beautiful trilobite, challenging to prep, and showing some truly remarkable and fascinating features.

Gerastos sp.

I agree, fascinating specimen and the microstructures on the scale definitely strike me as different. Gooed prep job and nice pictures, too. I can not help you with the identification, but I'm curious what it would be. I read about Gerastos bearing tubercles with pores in a Van Viersen & Prescher 2010. But large pores like these, no. As for other proetids, I know Dechenella for example has many pores (but they are smaller). But this is something else entirely. Interesting!

Kommentare zum Trilobiten-Adventskalender 2014 / Comments on the trilobite Advent calendar 2014

Thanks for the link, I missed that discussion. Interesting reading. Distinguishing some of the Phacopid genera, like for example Phacops as you point out, is relatively feasible in many cases. But in some way Geesops remains a bit of a thrash can genus to me. Maybe the discussion you refer to sheds new light on the subject.

Kommentare zum Trilobiten-Adventskalender 2014 / Comments on the trilobite Advent calendar 2014

This calendar has so far been extremely enjoyable! Congrats to the participants, not only for the high quality trilobites, but also for taking the time to write up what makes these trilobites special. This last Geesops is no exception. I think I saw previous pics of this specimen, also including a Gerastos in the matrix somewhere. Or do I confuse it with another specimen? Something that also keeps on bugging me (pun intended): how to differentiate Geesops from other commen Phacopid genera? I kno...
